The District of Columbia Court of Appeals issued Order No. M-277-21 on June 22, adopting amendments to Rule 49 on the unauthorized practice of law (UPL). The revised rule takes effect on August 22.

The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit is accepting applications for the position of federal public defender for the District of Columbia. Serving a four-year term beginning September 22, 2022, the federal public defender provides federal criminal defense services to individuals unable to afford counsel.

Bar members, leaders, and others in the D.C. legal community gathered on June 23 at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel for the Bar’s 2022 Conference celebrating its golden anniversary and envisioning its next 50 years. The event featured panel discussions with past and present leaders of the Bar as well as a fireside chat with high-powered U.S. Supreme Court litigator Neal Katyal.

On June 24 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 22-09 regarding the establishment of post-commitment juvenile attorney panel members. This order supersedes Administrative Order 22-08 issued June 8.

On June 22 the D.C. Bar Intellectual Property (IP) Law Community honored John M. Whealan, associate dean for IP law at George Washington University Law School (GW Law), with its Champion of Intellectual Property Award. The ceremony was held in person on the rooftop of the D.C. Bar headquarters.

The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center raised a record-breaking $1.23 million for the 2022 Presidents Reception on June 23 at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel. The annual event, hosted by past presidents of the Bar, raises funds to support the Center’s transformative work and in honor of the Bar’s incoming president.

On June 23 nearly 300 people gathered at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel for the D.C. Bar Celebration of Leadership featuring the formal swearing in of Ellen M. Jakovic, of counsel at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, as the Bar’s 51st president. Other highlights of the evening included the presentation of awards to outstanding Bar members and groups that have raised the standard for legal excellence and service to the community.
