Bankruptcy Clinic
The Bankruptcy Clinic is currently accepting new intakes. For more information, please contact [email protected].
The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center’s Bankruptcy Clinic provides free legal representation to District residents of limited means seeking relief from debt through Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
Through the Clinic, volunteer attorneys represent clients in all aspects of a Chapter 7 case, including providing legal advice, preparing petitions and related documents, attending the meeting of creditors, and guiding clients through the process until the case is completed.
The Bankruptcy Clinic assists individuals and families of limited means who reside in the District of Columbia and are appropriate candidates for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.
All applicants are prescreened by the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center to ensure that:
- You meet the income and asset requirements for pro bono representation, and
- Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a suitable option for your financial circumstances.
The Clinic does not assist with Chapter 13 or business bankruptcies.
If you qualify for assistance, a volunteer attorney will be assigned to represent you throughout your Chapter 7 case.
Your attorney will:
- Explain the bankruptcy process and your rights and responsibilities;
- Prepare your bankruptcy petition, schedules, and supporting documentation;
- Represent you at the required meeting of creditors; and
- Provide advice and guidance through the conclusion of your case.
All services provided through the Clinic are free of charge.
Individuals seeking assistance should contact the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center to determine eligibility and begin the intake process.
