The D.C. Superior Court is seeking comment on proposed amendments to Criminal Rule 43 that will expand the court’s authority to permit a defendant to appear remotely. The amended rule also clarifies when a defendant must be physically present, when the defendant may participate remotely, and when a proceeding may occur in a defendant’s absence.

The D.C. Superior Court Rules Committee has completed its review of proposed amendments to Rule 43 of the Superior Court Rules of Civil Procedure. Changes to Rule 43(b) eliminate the requirement that a party seeking to present live testimony from a remote location establish “compelling circumstances.”

On August 12 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 22-20 , authorizing DC Affordable Law Firm (DCALF) employees who are not members of the District of Columbia Bar to provide pro bono and low bono legal services in the court’s Family Court, Probate Division, and Domestic Violence Division.

On August 12 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 22-19 vacating Administrative Order 22-18, which extended certain filing deadlines in the Civil, Probate and Tax Divisions because of a planned transition to a new case management and electronic filing system on August 22.

The District of Columbia Superior Court has added two new magistrate judges, Adriane R. Marblestein-Deare and Stephen Rickard, filling out the court’s complement of 26 magistrate judges.

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals has announced that public access to certain cases is now available on the court’s website. Currently, access is limited to civil briefs and orders filed or entered after August 1, 2021. The ultimate goal is to provide more web-based access to additional case types in the future.

The D.C. Access to Justice Commission raised a record $7.2 million during its 2021 Raising the Bar in D.C. Campaign, with 34 law firms donating a portion of their D.C. office revenue toward enhancing access to civil legal services in the District.
