Banneker Science FairThe D.C. Bar Communities are proud to sponsor the Annual Benjamin Banneker Academic High School Science Fair.

Banneker High School is a magnet school that attracts top local students with particular interests in math, science, and technology, and proudly boasts that 100 percent of its graduates are accepted into college. In a 2016 speech at the school, former President Barack Obama praised these achievements: "We have made a lot of progress in terms of making sure that young people across the country get the kind of great education that you're getting here at Banneker, and I am really proud of what we've accomplished. I'm proud of what the District of Columbia has accomplished."

Every year, all students participate in the fair by completing a science project in one of 15 categories, including animal sciences, behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, and many others. Winners will go on to compete at city, regional, and national level science fairs.

Communities from the D.C. Bar have been proud sponsors of the annual Benjamin Banneker Academic High School Science Fair since 1996.

Want to Volunteer?

Volunteer judges need no scientific degree or prior training. On the day of the Fair, judges attend a short, pre-fair briefing followed by a half-day presentation of the science projects by the students. Judges are assigned to groups, talk to students about their project and score each project according to a list of prescribed criteria. Each group of judges then collectively selects winners for the assigned category. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for volunteer judges.
