If you are an existing member looking to change status or be reinstated to Active status, follow the steps below to ensure Mandatory Course compliance. Each member must register for and purchase the Course separately. Multiple people may not complete the Course using a single registration.
- Determine if you need to take the Mandatory Course.
If any of the following are true, you will need to complete the Mandatory Course to change status to or get reinstated.- Hold an Inactive status for five years or more
- Hold a Suspended status for five years or more
- Hold a Resigned or Retired status for five years or
- Judicial member status for five years or more and switching to Active status
- Any member who has held any combination of statuses other than Active (Inactive, Judicial, Inactive/Retired, Suspended) for five years or more
- Suspended for non-payment of dues for five years or more; or failure to file a resignation statement
- Purchase the Mandatory Course on-demand video presentation.
- You will find the Mandatory Course available for purchase in the D.C. Bar Online Catalog. Click here to register.
- Complete the Mandatory Course on-demand video presentation.
- You have 365 days to watch the on-demand video presentation after purchasing.
- Demonstrate compliance by inputting codes.
- At the conclusion of the course, you will receive a link to input a series of random codes that were displayed and announced during the presentation. Input the codes to demonstrate compliance.
- Download your certificate for your records.
- Download your certificate of completion for your records. You will receive the certificate by email; it will also be available for download in your D.C. Bar account. You do not have to submit a copy to the D.C. Bar.

Additional Steps
If you are currently an Inactive, Judicial, or Retired member seeking to become an Active member AND must complete the Course, you may change your membership class after completing the Mandatory Course by completing the following additional step:
- If you have already paid license fees for the current fiscal year, log into your online member account to submit a Member Type Change request and remit payment of any additional amounts due. Changes submitted online are effective immediately upon submission. (Note: Any change to the Judicial class of membership will require verification of Judicial standing upon submission of the request before changes can become effective.
- If you have not paid your annual license fee for the current fiscal year, you may select your desired class of membership during the annual renewal online process or by contacting Member Services by phone at 202-626-3475.
If you are currently suspended for nonpayment of dues, suspended for failure to complete the Mandatory Course, resigned, you may reinstate your membership after completing the Mandatory Course by completing the following additional step:
- Submit a completed Reinstatement Form and include payment of any payable license and/or reinstatement fees. The form, which includes payment information, may be submitted online, by email to [email protected], or by fax to 1-866-550-9331.
- Once processed, your reinstatement request is submitted for approval by the Office of Disciplinary Counsel. The estimated processing time is 1 to 5 business days. If you have not received your notice of reinstatement within 7 business days, or have questions about the reinstatement process, please call 202-626-3475 or send an email to [email protected].
