How Judicial Evaluations Benefit the Courts and the Public

Every year the D.C. Bar Judicial Evaluation Committee (JEC) conducts a survey on the performance of selected judges of the D.C. Court of Appeals and D.C. Superior Court to help improve the administration of justice in the District of Columbia. Input from D.C. Bar members helps the chief judges of the D.C. Courts address concerns about a judge’s conduct, highlights best practices and conduct that should be commended, and allows the evaluated judges themselves to receive vital feedback.

Comment on Proposed Changes to D.C. Rules Pertaining to Nonlawyer Owners in a Firm

The District of Columbia Bar’s Innovations in Legal Practice Committee (ILPC) is seeking comments on proposed amendments to D.C. Rule of Professional Conduct 5.4(b) and its Comments. The proposed revisions would allow D.C. Bar lawyers to cooperate and share fees with nonlawyers in a firm where its “principal” rather than “sole” purpose is the provision of legal services to clients, and where any other services provided by the firm are law-related services.

Court of Appeals Considers Diploma Privilege, Expanded Temporary Practice for Law School Grads

Following its decision to cancel the July 2020 in-person D.C. bar exam and administer an online exam in October, the D.C. Court of Appeals is now considering requests for the court to (1) establish a diploma privilege for law school graduates and/or (2) broaden the circumstances in which they can temporarily practice law prior to being admitted to the D.C. Bar.
