Murray Scheel

Murray Scheel is the Managing Attorney for the Future Planning & Probate Program at the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center. In this role, he is developing brief advice and representation services for simple estate planning and probate for low-income District residents.

Prior to joining the Pro Bono Center, Murray worked as a senior staff attorney at Justice in Aging, where he engaged in Medicaid and Medicare policy advocacy. He also recently conducted public benefits counseling for participants in a guaranteed income project, Mother’s Outreach Network.

From 2013 to 2022, Murray was a senior staff attorney at Whitman-Walker Health, the nation's oldest medical-legal partnership, dedicated to LGBTQ+ and HIV health. He focused on legal services and policy initiatives to address the needs of elderly individuals, including estate planning services and public benefits.

Earlier in his career, Murray served as a senior associate in civil litigation at Karp, Wigodsky, Norwind, Kudel and Gold, P.A.  Before entering private practice, he clerked for the Honorable Noel A. Kramer on the D.C. Superior Court and the Honorable Vanessa Ruiz on the D.C. Court of Appeals.

Murray holds a Bachelor of Arts with honors from Swarthmore College, a Master of Social Work from University of Maryland School of Social Work, and a Juris Doctor from the George Washington University Law School.  He is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars.
