Superior Court Creates New Processes for Sealing or Expungement of Cases
June 02, 2025
In light of a high volume of automatic sealing or expungement of cases attributed to the Second Chance Amendment Act, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia has created new processes to facilitate more effective handling of motions to seal, expunge, and set aside cases.
On May 30 the court issued Administrative Order 25-11, stating that judicial officers will continue issuing orders to seal, expunge, or set aside cases where judicial review was conducted. To notify agencies to take appropriate and timely action on cases ordered sealed, expunged, or set aside, reports and lists created by the Criminal Division may serve as a substitute for individual judicial orders.
