Court of Appeals Announces Public Access Site for Certain Civil Cases

August 04, 2022

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals has announced that public access to certain cases is now available on the court’s website. Currently, access is limited to civil briefs and orders filed or entered after August 1, 2021. The ultimate goal is to provide more web-based access to additional case types in the future.

The court uses the civil (CV) designation for the following case subtypes: Civil I, collections, contracts, general civil, landlord and tenant, liens, malpractice, merit personnel, other civil, property, real property, torts, and vehicle matters. The CV designation does not include cases involving family law, probate, special proceedings, tax, bar discipline, and cases coming directly to the court from District agencies.

Parties filing briefs in civil cases must redact these documents, in compliance with the redaction rules set out in amended Order M-274-21 and Super. Ct. Civ. R. 5.2. Cases, events, and documents that are nonpublic, sealed, or confidential are not available for public viewing on this site, but some may be available for public viewing at the courthouse.
