Superior Court Proposes Changes to Rules for Small Claims and Conciliation Branch

The D.C. Superior Court Rules Committee recently reviewed proposed amendments to the court’s Rules of Procedure for the Small Claims and Conciliation Branch 3, 4, 18, and 19. In general the changes highlight new requirements included in emergency, temporary, and permanent legislation amending D.C. Code § 28-3814 (Debt collection). New subsections to Rule 4 permit the court to authorize an alternative means of service and to allow posting on the court’s website when a plaintiff is unable to pay the cost of publication.

The Rules Committee will recommend approval of the amendments by the Superior Court Board of Judges unless, after consideration of comments from the bar and the public, they are modified or withdrawn.
