The D.C. Bar is looking to train a new class of inspiring legal leaders with its re-envisioned John Payton Leadership Academy, which begins on March 30, 2020. Inaugurated in 2013 and named for former D.C. Bar president John Payton, the interactive training program will equip attorneys with the tools they need to excel in their practice, thrive and succeed in fast-paced environments, and lead in their communities. The application deadline is January 30.

The Leadership Academy will be held over a period of three months and include three onsite sessions, two webinars or conference calls, one pro bono service commitment, and several distance learning assignments. A key update in this year’s Leadership Academy is that the program will be taught by lawyers for lawyers.

“The enhanced program builds on the previous John Payton Leadership Academy programming, maintaining its beneficial lessons while ensuring [it] fulfills the needs of the membership in this fast-paced legal and business environment,” says Laurie Lyte of Lytehouse Solutions LLC who is serving as a consultant for this year’s academy.

Lyte says the academy will focus on essential leadership skills for lawyers, including “creating a vision, setting goals, building trust and relationships, communicating effectively, and working to bring the best out of colleagues and organizations.”

The academy is geared toward diverse legal professionals, from new associates to veteran attorneys, who would like to further their leadership skills and explore their potential as leaders within the D.C. Bar and other community organizations.

“Participants of the academy will have time to utilize and refine the skills they learn by applying [them] to their professional lives, with a chance to receive coaching and feedback as desired,” says Lyte.
