On October 24 the D.C. Bar Communities showed its continued support of Benjamin Banneker Academic High’s annual science fair, helping to present 47 prizes at its awards ceremony and announcing a $2,000 contribution to the school’s science department. This year marks two decades of the D.C. Bar Communities’ sponsorship of the science fair.

During the ceremony, teacher Jesus Kabingue of Banneker’s science department introduced several students who shared their fellowship experiences over the past year, including computer science and coding opportunities, as well as roles with NASA, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Carnegie Institute.

The top winners of this year’s science fair were Brandon Clarke for his “Flashlight Without Batteries” project and Sharon Joseph for her “Riding on Air” project. The fair awarded prizes across the categories of chemistry, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, behavioral and social sciences, mathematics and computer sciences, and more.

“We support Banneker’s science fair because we believe in the value that STEM opportunities provide students,” said Hillary Lee of the D.C. Bar Communities in her remarks. “Many lawyers have found success in their careers [by] combining science with the law.”

Banneker High School has a 100 percent college acceptance rate and is ranked first within District of Columbia high schools and number 178 nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report rankings released in April 2019.
