2025–2030 Strategic Plan

Overview

On June 17, 2025, the D.C. Bar Board of Governors approved the 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, charting a bold course for the organization for the next five years. This plan reaffirms the Bar’s mission to support the legal profession, promote access to justice, and serve the public with integrity and excellence.

The plan is anchored in four strategic outcomes:

  1. A legal profession defined by excellence, inclusion, and innovation
  2. Lawyers’ professional growth and satisfaction
  3. Increased access to legal information and services
  4. Organizational excellence

These priorities reflect the Bar’s commitment to its core values of service, integrity, inclusion, and leadership.

Process

The strategic planning process, which began in 2024, was guided by a diverse committee of Bar leaders and members appointed by immediate past president Shaun Snyder (2024–25) and chaired by past president Geoff Klineberg (2020–21). The Strategic Planning Committee engaged in a comprehensive review of the current legal landscape, internal operations, and member needs.
 
Through surveys, focus groups, and stakeholder interviews, the committee gathered insights from across the Bar’s more than 121,000 members. The process emphasized transparency, inclusion, and responsiveness to the evolving needs of the legal profession and the communities it supports.

Looking Ahead

With the plan now in place, the D.C. Bar is focused on implementation. Executive leadership and staff members will partner with the Board of Governors to translate strategic objectives into measurable initiatives. This includes aligning resources, enhancing member services, and fostering innovation across all areas of the Bar’s work.

The 2025–2030 Strategic Plan is both a roadmap and a call to action. It positions the Bar to lead with purpose, adapt with agility, and deliver value to members and the public alike.

Outcome 1: A legal profession defined by excellence, inclusion, and innovation

Strategic Objectives

  1. Preserve the integrity of an independent legal profession that regulates lawyers fairly and uniformly throughout the District of Columbia
  2. Convene and collaborate with the courts, voluntary bars, and other stakeholders
  3. Advance a culture of inclusion and excellence
  4. Champion lawyer and law student wellness

Outcome 2: Lawyers’ professional growth and satisfaction

Strategic Objectives

  1. Offer exceptional learning opportunities to equip every lawyer to practice with excellence
  2. Foster career exploration, and support lawyers as they navigate career transitions
  3. Develop lawyers as leaders in the profession and in their communities
  4. Create opportunities for connection to foster learning, professionalism, and wellbeing

Outcome 3: Increased access to legal information and services

Strategic Objectives

  1. Encourage lawyers’ contribution of time and financial resources to serving clients of limited means
  2. Drive innovation and educate members about practices that result in greater access to legal information and services
  3. Facilitate collaboration among legal services organizations to effectively leverage resources
  4. Educate the public about the availability of legal services and their importance within the community

Outcome 4: Organizational excellence

Strategic Objectives

  1. Provide outstanding service experiences and ensure the accessibility of D.C. Bar programs and resources
  2. Communicate effectively to build lawyers’ familiarity with the D.C. Bar and its offerings
  3. Foster an inclusive workplace culture that enables the D.C. Bar to attract and retain exceptional staff
  4. Sustain a strong fiscal position and align resources with the D.C Bar’s strategic priorities
  5. Preserve and strengthen governance practices that support organizational agility and resilience
