This class will provide tips on structuring a cohesive argument and presenting those arguments effectively in a brief. It will focus on establishing the rhetorical setting, identifying and leveraging effective tools for persuasion, organizing the components of the appellate brief, and structuring a cohesive argument. In addition, the class will focus on defining and understanding counterargument, as well as effective and ineffective techniques in responding to counterargument. Attendees can expect to gain concrete and deployable strategies for crafting briefs that are persuasive, well-structured, and take advantage of rhetorical opportunities to respond to counterarguments. Sample briefs and responses will be used to illustrate persuasive writing techniques that can be put to use immediately in any brief-writing practice.
