The past year has been the most challenging in recent memory. Responding to this, the Communities Office and the Lawyer Assistance Program have partnered to create a program for all legal professionals and support staff who want to make sense of these challenges and focus on wellbeing. Join us for a day of professional and personal renewal.

10:00 – 10:10 a.m.: Event Launch – Candace Smith-Tucker, Esq. & Denise Perme, LICSW

10:10 – 10:55 a.m.: Keynote Presentation – Unequal Burdens: New Data on Gender-Specific Risk Factors for Mental Health Problems and Attrition Among Licensed Attorneys – Patrick Krill, Esq.
Patrick Krill will discuss key findings from the 2020 attorney mental health research project that he led in collaboration with the D.C. Bar and California Lawyers Association. Krill and his study co-author, Dr. Justin Anker, will be publishing several papers on their most significant findings, and Krill will join us at the Wellness Fair to provide insight into this pivotal work.

11:10 – 11:50 a.m.: Morning Break Out Sessions

  • Grief Unplugged – Heather Horton, Esq., ACC; Denise Perme, LICSW (Moderator)
    As long as the impact of grief goes unaddressed, lawyers will suffer and inclusion and well-being initiatives may miss their mark. This moderated discussion will explore the impact of grief in the legal profession before the pandemic and today, as well as ways to provide support for grieving lawyers, balance productivity moving forward, and implement grief-informed cultures.
  • Healthier Sips – Siobhan Donnelly, PsyD
    This presentation will focus on a topic we could all benefit from: how to return to a healthier relationship with alcohol and drinking now that that we can see light at the end of the tunnel for the pandemic.

12:05 – 12:55 p.m.: Brown Bag at Home: A Personal Path to Wellness – Bonnie Prober, Esq.
In this presentation, Bonnie will draw on her unique perspective as both a lawyer and social worker to explore the specific stressors inherent in the practice of law, as well as the challenges faced by attorneys in achieving a healthy work-life balance.  Bonnie will share her personal journey, and will offer concrete strategies for managing stress, incorporating self-care and mindfulness practice into your daily routine, and improving overall wellness.

12:55 – 1:10 p.m.: Break

1:10 – 1:50 p.m.: Afternoon Break Out Sessions

  • Aligning your Career Goals with your Values – Elena Deutsch, MPH
    Want to align your work with your values or yearn to have greater fulfillment and impact? In this session we will quickly clarify your TOP values and show you a tool that can help you think, feel, and act that yields new results. You will leave on your way to greater satisfaction!
  • Lawyering for Busy Parents and Parenting for Busy Lawyers –Fabio Leonardi, Esq.; Sarah Horowitz, Esq.; & Alex Reid, Esq; and Rochelle Washington, Esq.; Niki Irish, LICSW (Moderator)
    Although we are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, the road continues to be filled with stress and uncertainty. Join our speakers for a conversation on how to  navigate the choppy waters of parenthood during the pandemic and beyond.

1:55 – 2:25 p.m.: Yoga for Stress Management – Dana Shaker, Esq.
We will close the day’s events with a session addressing the inner workings of the body’s nervous system and how yoga can support overall wellbeing and contribute to stress management.
