Seven Steps to Refresh Yourself in the New Year

As the year begins, the D.C. Bar Lawyer Assistance Program offers seven tips to begin 2018 refreshed and ready to take on a new year both professionally and personally.

1) Don’t let those phone dings and blinking lights rule your world. Check your email at set times, not constantly.  

2) Find a creative outlet to increase your energy. Cook, knit, scrapbook, doodle. 

3) Pinterest not your thing? Reconnect with nature. Spend some time outdoors, whether you’re hiking a local nature trail or cycling around your neighborhood.  

4) Log your worries before bed. It can help you put them away for the night, letting your brain relax and stop nagging you. 

5) Isolation can cause health problems. Seek out friends, family, or other connections, such as volunteering. The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center is a great place to start to find rewarding volunteer opportunities

6) Allow yourself five minutes to dwell on a mistake, then move on. Don’t waste your energy on things you cannot change. 

7) We all know a good routine includes exercise, nutrition, play, and connection, but we often let things slide. Meetings aren’t just for work. If you need to, schedule time for yourself.
