In February's Washington Lawyer, we asked law firm partners about how employee diversity adds value to law firms. Below, Charles W. Johnson IV of Akin Gump, speaks about his firm's commitment through its programs and recruitment to expand diversity, as well as about the importance for people, both in law firms and in society, to engage in conversations about inclusion.

Diversity has always been a priority of the firm, culturally, and it's very much evident in our numbers, our recognitions, and our programs writ large. This commitment is very purposeful in terms of recruitment, socialization, and scholarships. It's all directed toward those important values. It feels like there's an opportunity and a tension in society right now, especially after these elections. There's a need for there to be an institutionalization of diversity and inclusion. The top participants in society, whether business or government officials, populate those places, and we talk about these things and recognize how important these things are to our society.
