Additional Updates: Disaster Relief Help for Texas

August 29, 2017

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey the legal community is coming together to support Texas in disaster relief efforts. See below for the most up to date information on how attorneys across the country can help.

  • In addition, the State Bar of Texas has a legal hotline to help people find answers to basic legal questions and connects them with local legal aid providers following declared disasters. The toll-free hotline can answer in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Reach them at 800-504-7030.

  • The Supreme Court of Texas has amended an emergency order allowing out-of-state attorneys to practice Texas law on a temporary basis. To volunteer, complete this form issued by the State Bar of Texas or email Disaster Legal Services team member Scott Lachman.

  • The ABA has also established a webpage offering a unified list of resources and important information on ways to support those in need.

  • You can now register as a volunteer attorney through ABA Free Legal Answers. Once your account is activated, you will receive a welcome message from the Texas State Bar, which will include a Registration for Temporary Practice of Texas Law. Once you complete and return this form, and it is received by the Texas State Bar, your registration will be activated. For more information regarding volunteering contact legalanswers@texasbar.com.
