Eat Well, Do Justice

August 1, 2017

Tzedek DC logoTwo of pillars of D.C. life—legal powerhouses and foodie extraordinaires—will join forces on Monday, September 25, for Tzedek DC’s Celebrity Chef Kugel Cook-Off, benefitting low-income D.C. residents dealing with debt-related legal challenges. Enjoy delicious dishes while helping low-income debtors get access to the civil justice system.

Battling for kugel supremacy (a traditional Jewish casserole dish) will be chefs Michael Friedman of Red Hen and All Purpose; Kyle Bailey of the Salt Line; Alex Levin of the Schlow Restaurant Group; Danny Lee of Mandu; and Pati Jinich of Pati’s Mexican Table.

Guest judges include journalist David Gregory, cookbook author Joan Nathan, and former D.C. Bar presidents Annamaria Steward and Marna Tucker.

Tzedek DC’s mission is to safeguard the legal rights of low-income D.C. residents dealing with often unjust, abusive, and illegal debt collection practices, as well as other consumer protection problems like credit reporting issues, identity theft, and predatory lending. The consequences of adverse court judgments in debt-related cases can be devastating for a family’s well-being and stability. Tzedek DC aims to level the playing field for low-income D.C. debtors by facilitating access to the civil justice system. By addressing debt-related legal issues before they become irreversible, catastrophic crises, Tzedek DC can enhance the overall stability and financial health of low-income D.C. families.

The event will be held at the University of the District of Columbia Student Center at 6:30 p.m.
