Frederick B. Abramson Award: Leadership Development Committee

D.C. Bar Leadership Development Committee

The D.C. Bar Leadership Development Committee (LDC) will be honored with the Frederick B. Abramson Award at the D.C. Bar Celebration of Leadership on June 14 at the Mayflower Hotel.

The Abramson Award recognizes a Bar committee or project that through innovation, initiative, or unusual dedication has resulted in a significant benefit to the Bar and its individual members. The honor goes to the LDC for undertaking the rebranding of the Bar’s sections into the D.C. Bar Communities. This initiative will enhance membership by fostering new community connections.

Concerned about a 10-year decline in sections membership, the Bar conducted a survey to find out what needs members identified and how the Bar could better serve those needs. The LDC was asked to study the governance structure of the D.C. Bar Sections and formed an Ad Hoc Committee on Sections Governance, which reviewed the history, financial and governance structures, policies, and challenges.

After this extensive evaluation, the LDC recommended that the Bar adopt a new identity as D.C. Bar Communities, with a focus on value for members, more engagement, and improved content. Communities would also streamline governance to encourage volunteer leadership.

Communities will be overseen by an 11-member Communities Committee, which will be appointed by and report to the Board of Governors. Each community will be headed by a steering committee whose candidates will be nominated by the Bar’s screening committee and elected by the members of the community. Bar staff will manage all the financial and administrative responsibilities, some of which are currently handled by volunteers.

The restructure allows members to select up to three communities for one price and includes free access to most events in those three communities, access to two free on demand CLE courses, and other incentives.
