Superior Court Extends Order on Release of Juveniles in Custody

May 1, 2020

On April 30 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia amended Administrative Order 20-07 ordering the release of juveniles held for failing to appear for hearings or for absconding from shelter placements. The amended order will remain in effect until further notice from the court.

Administrative Order 20-07 directed the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to notify the Court Social Services Division (CSSD) and the Office of the Attorney General of the District of Columbia (OAG) of arrests for failure to appear for hearings, after which the agencies would confer to determine whether the respondent poses a risk of harm to themselves or others. Those who do not pose a risk are to be released.

Following arrests for abscondence from a facility, the order directed the MPD to notify the Department of Youth Rehabilitative Services (DYRS), CSSD, and OAG to determine whether the youth should be held for court or released to DYRS, pending further court action.
