Register: Training for the D.C. Court of Appeals Mediation Pro Bono Counsel Panel

January 31, 2019

Register now for the D.C. Court of Appeals Mediation Pro Bono Counsel Panel – Introductory Training on February 8, 2019, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the D.C. Bar (901 4th Street, N.W.)!

Learn how the D.C. Court of Appeals is enhancing access to justice through its new appellate mediation pro bono counsel panel. This new initiative provides interested pro se parties with the opportunity to participate in court-sponsored mediation through the use of volunteer attorneys. When a prospective matter arises, it will be referred to interested members of the panel. If the litigant and counsel agree to work together, they will enter into an agreement for limited representation to cover the mediation. If the matter does not settle in mediation and counsel and litigant wish to continue to work together, they have the option to enter into an agreement for representation for the full appeal.

The session will provide an overview of the program and will explore the mechanics of appellate advocacy, effective representation of clients in mediation, cultural competency, and ethical considerations.

This training is mandatory for lawyers to become members of the mediation pro bono counsel panel. Individuals with an interest in appellate representation, either limited or full, who have not applied for the program are also welcome to attend.
