Bar Votes to Keep License Renewal Fees at Current Rates

April 18, 2019

On April 9 the D.C. Bar Board of Governors voted to keep the Bar’s license fee rates unchanged for any type of Bar membership for fiscal year 2019–2020. This is the first time in 22 years that the Bar has decided to not increase its license fees.

License fee rates for active and special legal consultant members are $317; $194 for inactive members; and $150 for judicial members. The 2019 online license renewal period begins on May 1.

D.C. Bar Chief Executive Officer Robert J. Spagnoletti cited two key factors for the Board’s decision: strong revenue from a growing membership and an anticipated surplus for the Bar for the third year in a row.

While other bar associations across the country have reported declining membership, the D.C. Bar continues to grow in size. As of March 2019, the D.C. Bar has 108,080 members in all 50 states and 80 countries, making it the largest unified bar in the United Sates.

Over the past year, Spagnoletti said, D.C. Bar staff and leadership also worked hard to generate revenue and cut unnecessary expenses, resulting in a surplus from operations.

“This represents a very powerful message that the D.C. Bar staff can open a building, increase our programming, and return a surplus budget without raising the license renewal fees,” Spagnoletti said.

The deadline for members to renew their license is July 1. For more information about license fees or for assistance updating your contact information, please contact Member Services at 202-626-3475 or email [email protected].
