Author Guidelines for www.dcbar.org

The D.C. Bar’s Web site, www.dcbar.org, publishes a wide range of material aimed at current and prospective members of the D.C. Bar as well as the public.

Authors interested in submitting content for publication on the Bar’s Web site should send a proposal letter to the managing editor. The proposal letter should include a brief description of the project and explain why the content would be of value to the site’s audience. Author credentials should be included in the proposal letter. Up to three writing samples of previously published material can also be submitted.

The editorial staff will consider completed manuscripts upon submission, but authors are encouraged to begin with a proposal letter to ensure consistency with the Web site’s editorial requirements.

In preparing Web content, prospective authors are offered the following guidance:

  • Web visitors typically scan content rather than read it word for word.
  • Simple sentence structure and small blocks of text facilitate ease of use; the most important information should be presented first and detail should be offered through links.
  • Web content is typically half the length of comparable print content.
  • Web content requires regular review and update.

Manuscripts should be submitted in electronic word processing format (preferably Microsoft Word).

All submissions are edited to conform with the D.C. Bar Style Guide. All submissions are subject to peer review and substantive editing as needed.

The Bar’s Web site does not republish previously published content or excerpts from previously published content.

All correspondence should be addressed to Tim Wells, Managing Editor, District of Columbia Bar, 1250 H Street NW, Sixth Floor, Washington, DC 20005-5937; e-mail twells@dcbar.org.
