D.C. Bar Intellectual Property Law Section Annual Report

Annual Report - June 2015
The Intellectual Property Law Section of the D.C. Bar has been active in planning and executing a variety of activities for our membership as well as contributions to the community. Details of our activities for fiscal year 2014-2015 include:

Community Outreach

Youth Law Fair
The Intellectual Property Law Section has contributed $1,000 to the Youth Law Fair and has actively recruited volunteers for the Fair from its membership.

2015 Benjamin Banneker Academic High School Science Fair
The Intellectual Property Law Section recruited volunteers to serve as judges for the Fair, which took place on February 20, 2015. The Intellectual Property Law Section, which has been a sponsor of this annual event since 1996, also presented the awards at an award ceremony on November 4, 2014, along with a donation of $2,500.

Membership and Financial

The Bar's financial statements show the section with a positive balance.

Programs
On September 9, 2014, the Trade Secret Committee of the Intellectual Property Law Section presented a program entitled "Best Practices for Protection from Trade Secret Theft and Handling Trade Secret Theft Accusations."

The Young Lawyers Committee of the Intellectual Property Law Section arranged a five-program series entitled "Young Lawyers Survival Skill Series." The series was presented in five consecutive months in 2015.

On February 11, 2015, the Patent Committee of the Intellectual Property Law Section presented a program entitled "The Patent Trial and Appeal Board: Surfing the Coming Wave."

On April 30, 2015, the Copyright Committee of the Intellectual Property Law Section presented a program entitled "Blurred Lines: Bad Law?"

On March 13, 2014, the Young Lawyers Committee organized a spring networking event for all members of the Intellectual Property Law Section.

The Patent Committee has scheduled a program entitled "A Fireside Chat with Michelle Lee" for June 24, 2015.

The Intellectual Property Law Section also has cosponsored, and is cosponsoring, several other programs with other Bar Sections.

Spring Reception
The Intellectual Property Law Section will hold its annual Spring Reception on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at the Dolley Madison House.This year the Intellectual Property Law Section will present its Champion of Intellectual Property (ChIP) Award to James Smith, Chief Administrative Patent Judge for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

We look forward to continuing these efforts and hosting a variety of other programs and events for the benefit of our members and the community in the next fiscal year.
