Certificate of Good Standing

Members of the District of Columbia Bar may obtain a Certificate of Good Standing from the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. The certificate reflects the attorney's name (as registered with the D.C. Bar), date of admission, membership status, the date of its preparation, and is signed by the Deputy Clerk.

Effective January 8, Certificates of Good Standing will be issued by the D.C. Bar on behalf of the Court of Appeals to help streamline the process to receive a Certificate of Good Standing. In spring 2018, the fulfillment of Certificates will also be transitioned online. Members will be able to receive their Certificates as PDFs. Learn more about why the changes were made and get answers to our frequent questions.

In the interim, the Bar will continue to issue and mail paper certificates. Please see the fee and processing schedule listed below.

Bar members can request request a certificate by making a purchase through the Marketplace. As we work toward a fully automated process utilizing the Marketplace, Certificate of Good Standing requests can be submitted through a SignNow form available on the Certificates and Forms page of the D.C. Bar website beginning January 8. To assist members during the transition, we will continue to issue and mail paper certificates, with expedited processing and shipping options available in February. Walk-in requests will also be accepted at the D.C. Bar offices at 1101 K Street NW, second floor. Requests will require a 48-hour processing time. After April 8, 2018, walk-in requests will no longer be accepted.

Mailed requests for Certificates of Good Standing will no longer be accepted; however, as a courtesy to our members we have a 30-day grace period for mailed requests. Please note mailed requests will not be accepted after February 8, 2018. Any mailed applications postmarked after February 8 will be returned to sender.
