Description: This course focuses on the basics of family law practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. It addresses key substantive and procedural differences among the three jurisdictions and offers pointers for effective practice in each of the major courts in the D.C. metropolitan area. The course is geared toward attorneys possessing some familiarity with the basics of family law such as equitable distribution, support, and custody, and who are interested in the state of the law on these issues in the three jurisdictions-whether or not they are admitted in each. Attendees will receive a synopsis of current laws on major family law topics in each jurisdiction.

Description: This class examines the common ethical issues that arise in family law matters in the District of Columbia, Mary­land, and Virginia, including practical tips for avoiding ethical complaints. Topics include:

Communications with clients and setting client expectations

Client input and control over substantive and procedural decisions

Handling difficult clients

Withdrawing from cases: Timing and ensuring the client's interests are protected

Conflicts of interest involving repeat clients or former adversaries

Client communications with adversaries.

Faculty discuss hypotheticals and invite audience participation using the D.C. Bar's responder system.
