On March 20 the District of Columbia Court of Appeals issued an order amending Rule 49(c)(13) and a commentary to that rule by deleting language that existed on the version of the rule posted to the court’s Web site on March 11.
According to Rule 49, only lawyers who are active members of the D.C. Bar are allowed to practice law in the District, unless the lawyer’s activities fall within one of the Rule’s exceptions.
The court made the amendments following recommendations by the D.C. Bar, which are based on recommendations by the Bar’s Special Committee on Multijurisdictional Practice, and amendments made by the court’s Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law.
The changes regarding Rule 49(c)(13) appear below. The first document is the court’s amended order regarding Rule 49(c)(13). The second document is the Rule 49 compare version. The third document is the Rule 49 corrected version.
