Charlotte Brookins-Hudson, an attorney who has dedicated nearly 30 years
of service to local and federal government, has been selected as the
recipient of the 2008 Beatrice Rosenberg Award for Excellence in Government
Service by the District of Columbia Bar.
The Rosenberg Award is presented annually to a D.C. Bar member who personifies
excellence in government service. In keeping with the exceptional accomplishments
of Ms. Rosenberg, honorees have demonstrated outstanding professional
judgment throughout long-term government careers, worked intentionally
to share their expertise as a mentor to younger government lawyers,
and devoted significant personal energies to public or community service.
Sandra J. Bernstein, legal director of the University Legal Services (ULS) Protection and Advocacy Program for the District of Columbia, has been selected the 2008 recipient of the Jerrold Scoutt Prize by the District of Columbia Bar Foundation.
The prize is awarded annually to an attorney who has worked for a significant portion of his or her career at a nonprofit organization, demonstrated compassionate concern for his or her clients, and exhibited a high degree of skill on their behalf.
Bernstein has spent more than a decade at ULS, an organization that has been designated as the protection and advocacy agency for people with disabilities in the District. Her efforts at ULS have ranged from individual representations to serving as lead attorney in a longstanding class action case regarding the care and treatment of disabled individuals.
The Scoutt Prize is named in honor of Jerrold Scoutt Jr., founding partner of Zuckert, Scoutt & Rasenberger, L.L.P., and a longtime supporter of legal services for the needy. The prize winner receives at $2,500 stipend, which is funded by the firm.
Both the Rosenberg Award and the Scoutt Prize will be presented at
