Frequent Questions
  1. How long does the entire process take?
Successful prosecution from a complaint may take from three to five years.
  2. What happens after my case is closed?
If your case was successfully prosecuted, you will be referred to the Clients’ Security Fund, where you can apply for a reimbursement of your attorney’s fees.
  3. Someone who pretended to be an attorney represented me. What can be done about it?
The Office of Bar Counsel does not handle cases involving nonlawyers. You should contact the D.C. Court of Appeals’ Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law.
  4. Are there any alternatives to filing a formal disciplinary complaint?
If problems with your attorney do not fit the issues listed in The Disciplinary Process, you may seek help from the Attorney/Client Arbitration Board and apply to file a petition to arbitrate a fee dispute or petition to arbitrate a legal malpractice claim.
