Nonprofit organizations make an important contribution to the District of Columbia. They provide vital services for those in need, including food, shelter, medical care, substance abuse treatment, and social services for the vulnerable population. Nonprofit organizations offer a helping hand by providing early childhood education, charter schools, continuing education, and job training. They assist families through home ownership programs and provide training and other support for small-business owners. Museums, performing arts groups, youth centers, and environmental organizations contribute to the quality of life in the District. Finally, nonprofit organizations are a substantial part of the District’s economy, providing employment and other economic benefits to those living in the District.
Nonprofit organizations face a number of critical legal needs. However, they often cannot afford to pay for legal help. As part of its service to the community, the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program assists nonprofit organizations in obtaining pro bono counsel.
The Community Economic Development (CED) Project will assist nonprofit organizations that meet the following eligibility requirements:
- The organization is a nonprofit charitable, religious, civic, community, or educational organization and a substantial percentage of its activities are designed to provide direct services to persons of limited means living in the District of Columbia
- The payment of legal fees would significantly deplete the organization’s ability to provide services or would be otherwise inappropriate
- In the case of anyone seeking to start a nonprofit organization, the person seeking assistance must a have a business plan or attended a business training course at a recognized business training center
