What is a Listserv?

A listserv is a program that automatically sends messages to multiple e-mail addresses on a mailing list. It is an electronic discussion group organized around a common interest or topic. It maintains a reviewable archive of past postings and can be configured to send participants full messages or digests, either immediately upon posting or at intervals designated by the participant.

Participation in a D.C. Bar section listserv is limited to members of the listserv’s sponsoring section. To become a listserv participant, a section member must respond affirmatively to an invitation and indicate consent to the Terms and Conditions of Use. A link to the terms and conditions, and to Listserv Opt-In Forms, appears below.

In addition to the terms and conditions of use, upon joining the list, new participants receive less formal document, setting out expectations about listserv etiquette.

Any section steering committee voting to sponsor a listserv would must also designate a section listserv coordinator and alternate coordinator. The coordinators review all postings. Breaches of listserv etiquette or of the terms and conditions of are dealt with by the coordinators, section leadership and the sections office.

Participants can unsubscribe at any time, and can be dropped from the list if they are no longer a member of the sponsoring section or for violating the listserv’s terms and conditions of use.

The sections office has authority to unsubscribe any participant, in accord with the terms and conditions of use. The sections office also has the authority to delete from the listserv archive any postings in violation of the terms and conditions.

See Terms and Conditions of Use and access a form to particpate in a Section Listserv.
