Law Practice Management Section’s
Spring 2007 E-Newsletter

The Law Practice Management Section steering committee has been busy the past year providing you with excellent programming, coordinating important community service activities, and working on development of an electronic “Message Board” for section members.
Legal Programs

2006
In September 2006, Lexa Gandolfo of 3210 Consulting presented her program on Web site marketing for lawyers, with an emphasis on small and solo firms. This program was very informative and well attended. (steering committee moderator: Jim Rocap)

Our October 2006 program featured legal research guru Sabrini Pacifici and taught participants about legal research management issues and solutions, focusing on finding information efficiently and cost-effectively. Ms. Pacifici spoke about research strategies, search engines, the reliability of the results of online searches, and maximizing value while minimizing the cost of online research. (steering committee moderator: Conrad Jacoby)

Reid Trautz provided us with "50 Hot Technology Tips, Tricks and Websites for Lawyers" in November 2006. Mr. Trautz’s highlights of law office technology provided attendees with the latest information on technology, computer safety issues, helpful websites, available programs for calendaring, billing, accounting, financial reporting, and more. (steering committee moderator: Jim Rocap)

"Etiquette for Lawyers" was the theme of the section’s December 2006 program. The program taught participants important skills that ranged from basic (but crucial) table manners through negotiating the endless series of holiday parties. A key take-away was that proper etiquette can give you an edge over your competition, because well-mannered individuals create a comfortable environment for everyone. (steering committee moderator: Lisa Horowitz)

2007
Our January 2007 program, “Blogging for Lawyers: How Practicing Lawyers Are Using Blogs to Find Clients, Fortune and Fame --- and How You Can, Too!” was a great success. Panelists shared tips on how to start blogging, as well as blog success stories. (steering committee moderator: Carolyn Elefant)

The February 2007 program taught us about "Putting Passion Back Into the Practice of Law." This program brought together a panel of professionals who deal with lawyer dissatisfaction issues and lawyers who have confronted these issues. There was a lively discussion among the panel and the audience on what lawyers can do to put passion back into the practice of law. (steering committee moderator: Stephen Marcus)

In March 2007, Jeffrey Berger and Robert Trout put on an excellent program, “Project Partnering: A Tool to Expand Your Practice.” This luncheon covered how to come up and employ business-partnering models, as well as practical and professional responsibility issues lawyers must consider in using these models. There were close to 50 attendees at this outstanding program. (steering committee moderator: Lisa Horowitz)

On April 10, 2007, the president of the D.C. Bar, James Sandman, led a panel discussion on mentoring and the critical role that it plays in lawyer professional advancement. (steering committee moderator: Peter Asaad)

We are also planning a program for May 24, 2007 on trends in legal staffing. This will be a great program you won’t want to miss. (steering committee moderator: Carolyn Elefant)

On June 13, 2007, please join us for our annual "Legends of the D.C. Bar" program. This year we will be honoring legal legends George Cohen and Betty Murphy, in an informal discussion session led by former LPM cochair Jeffrey Berger, about their careers and their insights into practicing law in Washington D.C. over the last four decades (steering committee moderator: Jim Rocap)

Attendance at this year’s programs has been excellent, averaging over 51 attendees per program. Don’t miss out – check our program flyers on a regular basis.

Community Service

The Law Practice Management Section has also been active with community service projects. We have published a pamphlet entitled "How to Find and Work With a Lawyer", in English and Spanish. We plan to tackle Korean in the coming year. This pamphlet has been widely distributed throughout the District of Columbia.

We are also putting a team together for the Greater D.C. Cares’ Servathon 2007, on May 5. This will be a great opportunity to meet fellow section members while giving back to the community at the same time.

Message Board

We had hoped to have the electronic message board up and running last fall. Unfortunately, the project was delayed because of the D.C. Bar’s upgrade of its computer software and facilities. We hope to have it available to all section members within the next month – look for our e-mail announcement.

The message board is intended to operate as a community location for LPM section members to share ideas, resources, and online discussions about the business of the law. It will only be as useful and successful as the level of participation by our members, so when you get the announcement, please sign up and help get the ball rolling.

Elections

Elections are coming up in May. We have six candidates running and three open spaces on the steering committee. Please be sure to vote.
