Health Law Section July 2009 E-Newsletter
Honors You always knew you were a member of the best section, right? Well, your belief received external confirmation when the D.C. Bar awarded the Health Law Section its Best Section of the Year Award at the annual dinner on June 25. The award was based on the section's achievements in quality CLE programming, a varied number of lunch programs, successful completion of the patient's rights card for nursing home residents, and editing the Patient Rights Manual, all while remaining within budget. Hats off and thanks to all who played a part, whether on the steering committee or as a member of one of our other committees. Ride the crest of our wave and join one of our committees, such as CLE, Programs, Young Practitioners, or Community Outreach. Contact either one of the current chairs, Robyn Diaz or Kendra Martello. Back to Top Elections As a result of the annual section steering committee elections and with a very strong group of candidates, the following were elected to a three year term on the steering committee: Lori K. Mihalich-Levin, a senior policy analyst at the Association of American Medical Colleges Cathy Zeman Scheineson, a partner at McDermott Will & Emery Stuart Silverman, a prosecutor with the D.C. Office of Inspector General, who won a second term with the steering committee We welcome these new and returning members and extend our thanks to those who are leaving the committee: Patrick Hope and Paul Kim, both of whom were hard-working, devoted members of the committee. Back to Top Programs We held a well-attended and fascinating Brown Bag lunch on the topic of health reform in April, hosted a speed mentoring evening with mentors and mentees gathering at Ober Kaler also in April. We also co-sponsored a program on HIPAA and security provisions in May. Back to Top New Officers Our newly constituted steering committee elected Robyn Diaz and Hemi Tewarson as the new cochairs. Robyn will also serve as Financial Officer. Kendra Martello, who had served as cochair for the past year, assumed leadership of the Programs Committee, along with Cathy Scheineson. Community outreach will be chaired by Cathy Scheineson and Lori Mihalich-Levin. Lori will also head Young Practitioners. Stuart Silverman continues his able leadership of the CLE Committee, with some interesting programs already in the works. Melinda Murray will continue as newsletter editor and Practice Manual coordinator. Congratulations to all and many thanks to last year's officers. We also wanted to thank the author/editors of our two Practice Manual chapters: Laurie Davis of the Public Defender Service on the Mental Health Proceedings chapter and Anne Hance of McDermott Will & Emery for the HMO and Managed Care Chapter. Laurie's chapter was reviewed by Jody Goodman of Crowell & Moring. Anne's chapter was reviewed by Robyn Diaz, our co-chair and associate general counsel at Medstar. Authoring two chapters in the Practice Manual instead of one is another feature that distinguishes our section. Back to Top New Benefit for Health Law Section Members The Health Law section is launching a professional listing feature in the newsletter. Anyone who is a member of the section may post a job opening, position wanted, office space, office equipment, or books. No recruiting companies may post. Those interested in posting an opening or an item, please send your posting with your name, address, and telephone number to Melinda Murray. Back to Top |
