Donating Computers and Other Electronics to Charitable Organizations

In fulfilling the Computer and Telecommunications Law Section’s commitment to public service and community outreach, below is a list of places and programs that refurbish used computers and/or telecommunications equipment for charitable purposes.

COMPUTERS

Community of Hope DC
Community of Hope DC accepts in-kind donations of computers, computer software, office equipment, and other goods.

Share the Technology
Share the Technology provides a free public-service database to help computer equipment donors connect with nonprofit organizations and individuals with disabilities seeking donations.

National Cristina Foundation
National Cristina Foundation matches donated computer technology to one or more of its partner organizations in the geographic area where the equipment is located. All partner organizations are not for profits or public agencies who provide education and/or training to people with disabilities or who are economically disadvantaged.

The Lazarus Foundation
The Lazarus Foundation is a Columbia, Maryland non-profit, charitable organization that distributes recycled computers to other charitable organizations and educational institutions. Recipients have included the Howard County Association for Retarded Kids, The Cedar Lane School, The Florence Bain Senior Center, the Black Education AIDS Project Inc., Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the People With AIDS Coalition.

The Conservative Caucus Foundation
The Conservative Caucus Foundation accepts donations of computers and monitors and other office equipment.

Levey’s List
Levey’s List (202-334-7662), organized by Washington Post writer Bob Levey, accepts used computer equipment, kitchen appliances, furniture, cars, and other large items and helps place them with underprivileged people.

WIRELESS PHONES

Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Violence
Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Violence or jcada@jcada.org) accepts cell phones for refurbishing to be given to victims of domestic violence.

Friends of the National Zoo (“FONZ”)
FONZ has partnered with ECO-Cell to collect and recycle Zoo visitors’ cell phones, batteries, and accessories. Working cell phones will be refurbished and donated to low-income people abroad and selected local organizations, such as battered women’s programs. ECO-Cell will pay FONZ up to $15 for every working cell phone.

CTIA - The Wireless Association
CTIA coordinates a wireless phone recycling/refurbishing program with its participating members.

The Charitable Recycling Program
The Charitable Recycling Program accepts all wireless phones and coordinates with a wide-range of charitable organizations that accept wireless phone donations.

TVs AND VIDEO EQUIPMENT

WVSA Arts Connection
WVSA Arts Connection accepts TVs and DVD players. WVSA is nonprofit organization serving Washington DC area children and young people with special needs, special talents, and special skills. Employing the arts as an innovative method of education, WVSA provides the tools for success in school, in adulthood, in life.

Community for Creative Non-Violence (“CCNV”)
CCNV operates a homeless shelter at Second and D Streets, NW. They accept donations of almost any item.

Arthritis Foundation, Metropolitan Washington Chapter
The Arthritis Foundation accepts donations of TVs, VCRs, and LCD projectors. Its offices are located at 4455 Connecticut Ave., Suite 300 and you can reach them at (202) 537-6800, ext. 3339.
