China’s New Anti-Monopoly Law
January 25, 2008
In 2007, China enacted its first comprehensive antitrust law, which
features broad merger control provisions, an expansive definition of
market dominance, stringent rules on market conduct, and express references
to intellectual property. It may have a substantial impact on foreign
investors in China, particularly those with significant IP portfolios.
Two leading Chinese practitioners will discuss the law and its implementation,
while antitrust counsel for a Fortune 100 company will describe its
impact on foreign investors. A senior U.S. antitrust enforcer will offer
lessons learned from the U.S. experience.
Panelists:
Stuart Chemtob, Antitrust Division, U.S. Department of Justice; Mark
Whitener, General Electric Company; Yingxi Fu-Tomlinson, Kaye Scholer,
Shanghai; Xiang Ji, Fangda partners, Beijing & Shanghai.
Moderator: Yee Wah Chin, Ingram Yuzek Gainen Carroll & Bertolotti.
12:00 - 2:00 pm, D.C. Bar Conference Center
“Speed Mentoring”
The section is organizing a speed mentoring session for late February. Speed mentoring will mimic speed dating and enable young lawyers and law students to meet seasoned practitioners and learn about their experiences in antitrust and consumer protection. If you are interested in participating, particularly as a mentor, please contact Danica Noble or Leonor Velazquez.

Volunteer and Outreach Opportunity
Danica Noble and Leonor Velazquez , Coordinators
The section has committed to sending at least one volunteer to the DC Pro Bono Program’s Advice and Referral Clinic held at Bread for the City on the second Saturday of each month. The minimal commitment only involves showing up from 9:30 to 12:30 and giving brief advice to civil clients from our DC community.
The clinic has resources to help find responses to the legal issues that may arise. Often, a matter can be solved with a simple letter or a phone call. We need volunteers from our section on February 9 and March 8. Please contact one of the coordinators if you are interested or have questions. Back to Top
