- The Arc of D.C. Inc.
202-636-2950 - This advocacy group for people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities needs gloves, hats, socks, sweat shirts or sweaters, wallets, watches, cassettes, portable radios or any clothing item. Gifts may be wrapped or unwrapped. If wrapped, attach a note indicating what the gift is and whether it is for a man or woman. Also needs volunteers to help prepare meals for holiday parties, put up and help decorate Christmas trees, take people shopping and interact with individuals. Take donations to Arc offices at 900 Varnum Street NE during business hours Monday through Friday.
- Bread for the City
202-265-2400 - This organization provides food, clothing, medical care, legal and social services to more than 8,000 low-income people monthly.

- Community Family Life Services
202-347-0511, ext. 402 - Serving the District’s poor and homeless, CFLS needs nonperishable food items, toiletries, etc. Contact Bobby Cooper or e-mail bcooper@cfls1.org.
- Community of Hope
202-232-7356 - Emergency shelter program needs food voucher certificates, twin- and full-size sheets, pillowcases, pillows, blankets and mattress covers, towels and washcloths, pots and pans, dishes and silverware, a van, coats, hats, gloves and thermal clothing. Take items to 1417 Belmont Street NW from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. Contact Michelle Washington.
- Creative Child Development Center
202-708-1935 - Nonprofit accepting donations of CD-ROMS for ages 18 months to 5 years, child videos, music CDs, cassette tapes, books, toys, musical instruments, costumes, tricycles, bicycles, scooters, toddler 10-inch chairs and portable tape recorders. Contact Director Sonia Pinder.
- EFFORTS
202-526-2727 - Employment for Former Offenders Receiving Treatment Services needs food, coats, undergarments, dresses, skirts, sweaters, pants and shoes for men, women and children. Money, computers and word-processing products are needed for computer literacy classes.
- For Love of Children
202-462-8686 - FLOC needs volunteers at different times during the year to assist with special events, walk-a-thons, house painting and maintenance, mailings, focus groups and other special activities and events. - Greater D.C. Cares

- Hannah House
202-289-4840 - The transitional house for homeless women and their children needs plus-size clothing, plastic storage bins, children’s games and videos and video games, houseplants and a new computer. Contact Sharon.
- House of Ruth

- Martha’s Table
202-328-6608 - Martha’s Table, which distributes meals to the homeless, will accept canned goods, clothing, toys, household and school supplies. volunteer@marthastable.org
- My Sister’s Place
202-529-5261, 24-hour hot line: 202-529-5991 - This shelter for battered women needs gift certificates for grocery stores and Metro Farecards for emergency transportation for women and children. Because its location is confidential, send items or donations to MSP, Box 29596, Washington, D.C. 20017.
- Northwestern Human Services
202-526-2950 - This organization for the homeless mentally ill needs toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, socks, gloves, hats, jackets, coats, thermal underwear and other clothing. Contact Kathy McWilliams-Roth.
- Project CHAMP
202-884-4250 - This pediatric HIV and AIDS organization at Children’s National Medical Center. Adult volunteers are needed during the year as big brothers and sisters to children with HIV. Contact Phyllis George.
- Sasha Bruce Youthwork Inc.
202-675-9340 - Professional Resource: Increase SBY’s effectiveness by contributing your professional knowledge. Everything from legal advice to interior design, electrical wiring to health care is welcome. One-time volunteer opportunities are available as well as continuing work.
- Southwest Community House Association

- D.C. Central Kitchen
202-234-0707 - Volunteer opportunities are available seven days a week. Volunteers assist with food preparation, kitchen upkeep, and outreach to residents of local homeless shelters. Advance reservation is required for anyone who wants to volunteer. Interested individuals and groups may schedule a date and time by visiting our online calendar. - Food & Friends
