The June 2002 “Speaking of Ethics” column was titled “The Client’s File” and it preceded the July/August “ The Client’s File II”. While this “Speaking of Ethics” column briefly quoted Opinion 168 to articulate that a lawyer should “err if at all on the side of serving the clients interests” with regard to handing over of documents, the column centered more on Opinions 250 and 230. These latter opinions address questions of the client’s ownership of property associated with her case, the restricted possibility for an unpaid lawyer for imposing a lien on the client’s files, and the work product exception for the lawyer.
