Withdrawing From a Client Representation: Breaking Up Is Hard to Do

Description: This course will provide the practicing attorney with a guide to the issues surrounding the termination of a representation before the conclusion of the matter. It will address situations where a lawyer must withdraw and where a lawyer may withdraw. The course also will cover the steps a lawyer should take in order to withdraw from a client matter, including issues relating to permission from courts or tribunals, notice to clients, deadlines, and confidentiality issues. Finally, the course will address obligations that ripen upon withdrawal, including the lawyer's duties for client files and funds. The program will use hypotheticals and practical examples to illustrate the application of the ethics rules.
