The Probate Resource Center provides free legal information on a walk-in basis to unrepresented parties who need to probate a large estate for a person who lived in the District of Columbia. The Resource Center is staffed by Volunteer attorneys who counsel individuals on the probate process; help prepare Petitions for Probate and other standard probate forms; and provide information regarding property distribution.
Volunteer attorneys do not provide legal advice or representation and do not assist parties in preparing pleadings other than through the use of the standard forms available on the court's website. This is a great opportunity for attorneys to provide direct pro bono legal services to individual pro se litigants while making a predictable time commitment.
The Probate Resource Center training will cover: An Overview of the Probate Resource Center Structure; The Role of the Resource Center Volunteer; The Opening and Administration of Decedents' Estates.
Important Information: This training session is appropriate for attorneys only. All attorneys must be D.C. Barred or have a pending application for admission. No particular expertise is required: An experienced probate practitioner is on-site during every session to assist volunteers. Malpractice insurance is provided by the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program to attorneys who volunteer at the Probate Resource Center.
The Probate Resource Center is open on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Trainees MUST commit to volunteering at the Resource Center during those hours at least four times within one year of completing the training.
Lunch is NOT provided to training participants.
