Description: A basic understanding of U.S. export controls and trade sanctions is critical for all attorneys advising companies that deal with customers, business partners, or affiliates located in other countries. Such knowledge is also important for those involved in the shipment of products or the transfer of controlled technology across national boundaries. In recent years, the U.S. government has elevated the attention it gives to compliance with U.S. export controls and trade sanctions as evidenced by increased audit and enforcement activities, along with increased fines and penalties. This class will provide a basic understanding of the key statutes and regulations, administrative procedures, and players involved in the regulation of U.S. companies (and sometimes their foreign affiliates) that engage in exports, re-exports, “deemed” exports (foreign nationals), or other activities involving foreign trade and business.
