The practice of law in the District of Columbia is governed by the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals Rules Governing the Bar. In Rule XI of the Rules Governing the Bar, the D.C. Court of Appeals established the Office of Bar Counsel to investigate alleged violations of the ethical standards contained in the Rules of Professional Conduct and to prosecute cases before the Board on Professional Responsibility and the court.
