CLE Obligations of D.C. Bar Members

The District of Columbia Bar does not have mandatory or minimum continuing legal education requirements, although its members are encouraged to engage in such continuing legal education as is necessary to maintain their competence to practice law. See D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct, Rule 1.1, Comment [6].

All attorneys admitted to the District of Columbia Bar after July 1, 1994, however, are required to complete the Mandatory District of Columbia Course on the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and District of Columbia Practice (Mandatory Course). This course must be completed within 12 months after admission to the D.C. Bar. After completion of the entire course, new admittees receive a certificate confirming their compliance with this mandatory requirement.

Attorneys who have been inactive members of the D.C. Bar for five or more years, or have resigned or have been suspended for five or more years, including suspension for nonpayment of dues, also must take the Mandatory Course before returning to active status.

For more information about this course or to obtain a registration form, please call the D.C. Bar CLE Office at 202-626-1315.

The D.C. Bar offers a full schedule of continuing legal education courses accredited in most jurisdictions that have mandatory and minimum continuing legal education requirements. To receive a catalog of courses, please call the CLE Office at 202-626-3488, or view course descriptions online.
