Impact of the Economy on the Legal Profession
2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

This panel will examine the impact of the current difficult economy on law practice management, the delivery of legal services, and the prospects for finding and funding attorney positions in the District of Columbia. Panelists will focus on the impacts on solo practitioners, small and medium–sized law firms, and large law firms; how the economy has affected salaries, billing rates, hiring practices, training, business development strategies, pro bono work, and practice in the courtroom; strategies for responding to the challenge of limited funding for the delivery of legal services to those who cannot afford lawyers; and the impact on students considering law school or preparing to enter the legal marketplace.

Addressing Impairment in the Legal Profession
4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

This panel will discuss the obligation of judges and lawyers to take appropriate action when they believe the performance of a fellow judge or lawyer is impaired by drug or alcohol abuse or by a mental, emotional or physical condition; recognizing signs of these problems in oneself or in colleagues; resources available to judges and lawyers seeking help in addressing these problems; and practical advice for law firms in addressing employment and professional liability implications of lawyer impairment.
