Report of the District of Columbia Bar Court Funding Committee: Resolution Authorizing Approval

Resolution Authorizing the Board of Governors and Bar Officers to Make Public Statements Concerning Funding of the District of Columbia Courts

Whereas, on February 6, 2001, the District of Columbia Bar Board of Governors approved the recommendation of the D.C. Bar Court Funding Committee set forth in the Report of the District of Columbia Court Funding Committee to seek membership approval to speak out in support of adequate funding legislation for the District of Columbia Courts, composed of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia ("the District of Columbia Courts"); and

Whereas, the Board of Governors is concerned that, as detailed in the Committee's Report, inadequate funding of the District of Columbia Courts has been an acute and detrimental problem for the Courts for the past several years, and that continued inadequate funding would have serious adverse effects on the core functions of the Courts and the Courts' ability to administer justice; and

Whereas, the Board of Governors believes that court funding issues are closely and directly related to the administration of justice in the District of Columbia;

Now, therefore, it is, by the membership of the D.C. Bar, at a Special Membership Meeting on March 16, 2001, duly called to consider this resolution, hereby resolved: That, effective immediately, the governors and officers of the District of Columbia Bar and their designees are authorized to make public statements and recommendations to support adequate funding for the District of Columbia Courts. This authorization includes the ability to speak on the issue of court funding in the context of specific legislation proposed or pending before Congress. This authorization is effective for five years, subject to annual renewal by the Board of Governors within that five-year period. March 16, 2001
