Give the Gift of Justice This Holiday Season

December 26, 2017

Ms. M

D.C. resident Ms. M* was one of the more than 17,000 low-income individuals and families in the District of Columbia that received critical legal assistance with help from the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center over the last year.

A collection agency brought a case against Ms. M, claiming that she had failed to pay more than $10,000 on an old car loan—an amount that far exceeded her annual income and would have devastated her personal finances. To make matters worse, she never received the court documents that the process server allegedly served, so she didn’t even know of the lawsuit until after the court entered a default judgment against her.

Ms. M, a 61-year-old sole caregiver of her young granddaughter, worried about how she would pay such a large amount and still provide for her family. Desperately needing help, she turned to the Pro Bono Center.

Ms. M’s case was thoroughly reviewed by the Pro Bono Center’s Advocacy & Justice Clinic and placed with attorney volunteers for full representation. Her pro bono attorneys immediately filed a Motion to Vacate the Default Judgment and Dismiss the Case. The court did just that and dismissed the case with prejudice. Ms. M no longer worries about the large default judgment, and she can now focus her limited resources on her family instead of debt collectors.

D.C. Bar members like you make it possible for us to provide full legal representation through our Advocacy & Justice Clinic, and through our many other award-winning programs, to vulnerable members of our community. Dedicated legal help from full representation clinics, Saturday neighborhood clinics, and resource centers has transformed the lives of our neighbors like Ms. M.
